CLIMATES OF SPAIN

Most of Spain is in the temperate zone, but the Canary Islands are in the hot zone.

SPANISH: La mayoría de España se encuentra en la zona templada pero las Islas Canarias están en la zona caliente.

There are also variations in climate between different regions. The coastal regions of Spain are warner that the interior. The mountain regions are colder.

SPANISH: Existen variaciones climáticas entre diferentes regiones. Las regiones costeras de España son más cálidas que en el interior. Las regiones montañosas son más frías.

There are four types of climates in Spain:

- Mediterranean (Mediterráneo).

- Oceanic (Oceánico).

- Subtropical (Subtropical).

- Mountain (de montaña).

WORLD CLIMATE

Weather and climate are different. Weather is the temperature, precipitation and wind at a particular time and place. Climate is the weather in a particular place over a long period time.

SPANISH: El tiempo atmosférico y el clima son diferentes. El tiempo atmosférico es la temperatura, las precipitaciones y el viento en un lugar y tiempo determinado. El clima es el tiempo atmosférico en un lugar durante un largo periodo de tiempo.

Factor which affect climate/ Factores que afectan el clima

There are many different climates om Earth. These climates depend on varius factors (Hay muchos climas en la Tierra. Estos climas dependen de varios factores:

Distance from the Equator. Places close to the Equator are hot. Places furtther from the Equator are colder. SPANISH: Distancia desde el Ecuador. Los lugares que están cerca del Ecuador son cálidos. Los lugares que están lejos del Ecuador son más fríos.

Other factors. In each climate zone, the climate changes because of various factors. For example it is colder in the mountains, and warmer at the coasts. SPANISH: Otros factores: En cada zona climática, el clima cambia debido a varios factores. Por ejemplo, hace más frío en las montañas y en las costa hace un clima más cálido.

HOT CLIMATES

Places within the hot zone have a hot climate. They have high temperatres all year round and it rains a lot. Typical vegetation is forest. Further away the Equator, it rains less, so there is less vegetation. This is typical of savannahs. In other places, like the desert, there is very little rain so there is very little vegetation.

SPANISH: Los lugares dentro de la zona caliente del planeta tienen clima caliente. Tienen altas temperaturas durante todo el año y llueve mucho. La vegetación típica de la zona es la jungla. Cuánto más lejos del Ecuador, llueve menos, hay menos vegetación como en las sabanas. En otros lugares, como el desierto, hay muy poca lluvia por eso hay poca vegetación.

COLD CLIMATES

Cold climates are within the cold zones near the North Pole and the South Pole. It is cold all year round. There is little precipitation, mainly as snow. Typical vegetation is tundra, where only moss and grasses grow. High mountain areas also have a cold climate, with more rain.

SPANISH: Los climas fríos se encuentran dentro de las zonas frías del planeta, cerca del Polo Norte y el Polo Sur. Hace frío alrededor de todo el año. Hay menos precipitación, principalmente en forma de nieve. La vegetación típica de la zona es la tundra, dónde solamente el musgo y las hierbas crecen. Las zonas de alta montaña también tienen un clima frío, pero con más lluvia.

TEMPERATE CLIMATES

Temperate climates are within the temperates zones. Theses climates vary. In some places, it rains a lot. In other places, it rains only a little. The four seasons are distinct. Typical vegetation is woodland and grassland.

SPANISH: Los climas templados se encuentran dentro de las zonas templadas. Estos climas son variados. En algunos lugares, llueve mucho. En otros, solo llueve un poco. Las cuatro estaciones son distintas. La vegetación típica de la zona es el bosque y la pradera.

THE ATMOSPHERE

What is the atmosphere like? ¿Cómo es la atmósfera?

The atmosphere is the layer of air that sorrounds the Earth. Air is a mixture of different gases. The main gasses in air are nitrogen and oxygen. Living things need oxygen to breathe. There is also carbon dioxide and water vapour in air.

SPANISH: La atmósfera es la capa de aire que rodea la Tierra. El aire es una mezcla de diferentes gases. Los principales fases del aire son el nitrógeno y el oxígeno. Los seres vivos necesitan oxígeno para respirar. Hay también dióxido de carbono y vapor de agua en el aire.

The atmosphere consist of many layers. The main layers are:

SPANISH:La atmósfera está compuesta de muchas capas. Las principales son:

Troposphere/Troposfera: This is the lower layer of the atmosphere. It contains the air that we breathe. Weather occurs in this layer. Es la capa más baja de la atmósfera. Contiene el aire que respiramos. El tiempo atmosférico ocurre en esta capa.

Stratosphere/Estratosfera: This is the upper layer of the atmosphere. It contains very little oxygen. It contains the ozone layer that protects us from the rays of the Sun. Es la capa superior de la atmósfera. Contiene muy poco oxígeno. Contiene la capa de ozono que nos protege de los rayos del Sol.

Outer layers/capas exteriores: There are other layers above the stratosphere like the mesosphere and the thermosphere. Above them all is outer space. Existen otras capas encima de la estratosfera como la mesosfera y la termosfera.

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular time and place. To define the weather of a place, you need to know the elements: temperature, precipitation and wind.

SPANISH: El tiempo atmosférico es el estado de la atmósfera en un lugar y tiempo determinado. Para definir el tiempo de un lugar, necesitas conocer sus elementos: temperatura, precipitaciones y viento.

A weather station contains varius instruments to help us measure and record the weather.

SPANISH: una estación meteorológica contiene varios instrumentos que nos ayudan a medir el tiempo atmosférico.

A thermometer measueres the temperature of the air. It tells us if it is hot or cold. SPANISH: un termómetro mide la temperatura del aire. Nos dice si está caliente o frío.

An anemometer measures the wind speed. SPANISH: Un anemómetro mide la velocidad del tiempo.

A weather vane tells us the wind direction: north, south, east and west. SPANISH: una veleta nos dice la dirección del viento: norte, sur, este y oeste.

A rain gauge measures precipitation. This can be rain, snow or hail.. SPANISH: Un pluviómetro mide la precipitación. Esta puede ser lluvia, nueve o granizo.
