NATURAL SCIENCE: ANIMALS, VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES.

There are many different animals. We can divide them into two main groups: animals that have a spine and animals that don't.

Animal Classifications

VERTEBRATES (vertebrados)

The name for animals with a spine is vertebrates. They have a skeleton inside them. Most vertebrates have a head, a torso, limbs and a tail.

Spine (columna vertebral)

Bones of the Skeleton and Spine
Vertebrates

Body parts

INVERTEBRATES (invertebrados)

The name for animals that don't have a spine is invertebrates. They don't have a skeleton inside them. They're usually smaller than vertebrates.

Invertebrates animals protect their bodies in different ways: some invertebrates have a shell to protect their bodies, for example, snails and oysters. Some invertebrates have a exoeskeleton. This is hard like a skeleton but it's outside the body. Crabs and cockroaches have an exoeskeleton. Some invertebrates don't have any protection. They have a soft body, for example a caterpillar.

Snail (it has a shell)
Crab (it has an exoeskeleton)

Silkworms (they have a soft body)

WORDLIST:

Vertebrate: vertebrado.
Invertebrate: invertebrado.
Spine: columna vertebral.
Skeleton: esqueleto.
Tail: cola.
Shell: concha/caparazón.
