MOUNTAIN AND PLAIN LANDSCAPES

How can we describe a mountain landscape?

There are different words for the types of landforms we can see.

Mountains are a type of landform and are found in a mountain landscape. They have:

Peak or Summit: the highest part.

Foot: the lowest part.

Slopes: the sides from top to bottom.

What different types of mountain landforms are there?

A group of mountains together is called a mountain range. Several mountain ranges are called a mountain system. Other landforms in a mountain landscape include:

• Hills. These are smaller than mountains. They are sometimes rounded in shape.

• a Massif. This is a group of mountains that are compacted together. This means they make one solid shape with several peaks.

What other types of landscapes are there?

• Plains are large areas of flat land. Crops grow on plains that are close to a river. We call these fertile plains. There can be differences in the elevation of flat land.

• A valley is low or flat land between two mountains or hills.
