MEDITERRANEAN COASTLINE
The Southern Mediterranean coast is straight with high cliffs as it is near the Penibaetic Range. The coastline is flatter around Málaga.
The Eastern Mediterranean coast is divided into two sections:
• The Eastern coast of Murcia and Valencia has coastal plains, sandy beaches, river deltas and large lagoons. The Mar Menor is a salt water lagoon, and the Albufera is a fresh water lagoon. There are cliffs where the Subbaetic Range reaches the coast.
• The Catalan coast has cliffs and small coves where the Catalan Coastal Range meets the sea. There are coastal plains with beaches.
THE SPANISH ARCHIPELAGOS
The Balearic Islands are mainly mountainous. Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera form part of the Subbaetic Range. Menorca forms part of the Catalan Coastal Range. Puig Major (1 445 m) is the highest peak. The coastline is high, with small coves in the north of Mallorca and Menorca, and long sandy beaches in the south.

The Canary Islands are mountainous and volcanic. There are large lava fields of rough terrain called malpaíses. The Teide (3 718 m) is Spain’s highest peak. The coastline consists of high cliffs, pebble beaches on the western islands, and sandy beaches on the eastern ones.
