MIXTURES

A pure substance consist of only one component. For example, silver, water and wood are pure substances.

SPANISH: Una sustancia pura consiste en un solo componente. Por ejemplo, plata, agua y madera son sustancias puras.

The wood is a pure substance

A mixture happens when we put two or more substances together. For example, we can mix a yoghurt with sugar.

SPANISH: Una mezcla ocurre cuando ponemos dos o más sustancias juntas. Por ejemplo, podemos mezclar un yogur con azúcar. 

There are two types of mixtures: heterogeneous mixtures and homogeneous mixtures.

SPANISH: Hay dos tipos de mezclas; mezclas heterogéneas y mezclas homogéneas.

Heterogeneous mixtures (mezclas heterogéneas)

In a heterogeneous mixture we put two or more substances together but we can see them separately.

For example, when we make a fruit salad, we make a heterogeneous mixture. We can still see the different fruit separately.

SPANISH: En una mezcla heterogénea ponemos dos o más sustancias juntas pero podemos verlas de forma separada (y separarlas). Por ejemplo, cuando hacemos una ensalada de frutas, estamos haciendo una mezcla heterogénea. Podemos diferenciar y ver las diferentes frutas a simple vista.

Homogeneous mixtures (mezcla homogénea):

 In a homogeneous mixture we put two or more substances together but we can't see each of them separately. The whole mixture looks the same. For example, when we put sugar in orange juice and stir, we make a homogeneous mixture. We can't see the sugar and the orange juice separately anymore.

SPANISH: En una mezcla homogénea ponemos dos o más sustancias juntas pero no podemos verlas de forma separada. La mezcla parece una única sustancia. Por ejemplo, cuando ponemos azúcar en zumo de naranja y lo removemos, estamos haciendo una mezcla homogénea. No podemos ver el azúcar ni el zumo de naranja de forma separada nunca más.

Separating mixtures (separando mezclas)

There are two ways of separating mixtures: evaporation and filtration.

SPANISH: Hay dos formas de separar mezclas: la evaporación y la filtración.

EVAPORATION (EVAPORACIÓN)

Evaporation separates homogeneous mixtures. For example, salt and water. 

- Leave the mixture in a shallow dish. (Deja la mezcla en plato poco profundo).

- The water evaporates. (El agua se evapora).

- The salt stays on the plate. (La sal permanece en el plato).

FILTRATION (FILTRACIÓN)

Filtration separates heterogeneous mixtures. For example, sand and water:

- Put the mixture into a filter. (Pon la mezcla dentro del filtrador).

- The water passes through the filter. (El agua pasa a través del filtrador):

- The sand stays in the filter. (La arena permanece en el filtrador).
