THE PRIMARY SECTOR

People who work in the primary sector get raw materials from nature. For example, farming gets raw materials from animals and plants. There are different types of farming.

SPANISH: Las personas que trabajan en el sector primario obtienen materias primas de la naturaleza. Por ejemplo, los granjeros obtienen materias primas procedentes de animales y plantas. Hay diferentes tipos de granjas.

Livestock farming (ganadería)

Livestock farmers raise animals. They get food such as milk, eggs and meat, and materials , such us leather and wool.

SPANISH: los ganaderos crían animales. Obtienen comida como leche y carne y materiales como cuero y lana.

Two examples of livestock farming are cattle farming, the raising of cows, and poultry farming, the raising of chickens and other birds.

SPANISH: dos ejemplos de ganaderías son la ganadería bovina o vacuna, la cría de vacas y la granja avícola, la cría de pollos y otros pájaros.

Arable farmers grow different types of crops.

SPANISH: los agricultores hacen crecer diferentes tipos de cultivos.

When crops only need the water from rain to grow, it's called dry farming. Wheat and olives are dry crops. When farmers need to water their crops, it's called irrigated farming. Tomatoes and peppers are irrigated crops.

SPANISH: Cuando los cultivos solo necesitan el agua de la lluvia para crecer se llama agricultura de secano. El trigo y los olivos son cultivos de secano. Cuando los agricultores necesitan regar sus cultivos, se llama agricultura de regadío. Los tomates y los pimientos son cultivos de regadío.

Fishing (Pesca)

Fishing is another area of the primary sector. Fishermen get raw materials from the sea and rivers. There are different types of fishing: deep-sea fishing and coastal fishing.

SPANISH: La pesca es otra actividad del sector primaria. Los pescadores obtienen materias primas del mar y los ríos. Hay diferentes tipos de pesca: pesca de altura (aguas profundas) y pesca de bajura (costera).

Some fishermen go far out to sea in large fishing boats. They freeze the fish they catch. This is called deep-sea fishing. Other fishermen and women catch fish and shellfish near the coast. This is called coastal fishing.

SPANISH: Algunos pescadores sale lejos por el mar en grandes barcos pesqueros. Ellos congelan el pescado que capturan. Este tipo de pesca se llama pesca de altura o pesca de aguas profundas. Otros pescadores o pescadoras atrapan peces y mariscos cerca de las costa. Esto se llama pesca de bajura o pesca costera.

Mining (Minería)

Mining is also part of the primary sector. Miners get raw materials from the ground. They work in mines. There are different types of mining: underground mining and surface mining.

SPANISH: La minería es también parte del sector primario. Los mineros obtienen materias primas del la tierra. Hay diferentes tipos de minería: minería subterránea y minería a cielo abierto.

Underground mining gets raw materials from under the ground, such as coal and petroleum. Surface mining gets raw materials from just below the Earth's surface, such as granite and marble.

SPANISH: La minería subterránea obtiene las materias primas de debajo de la tierra, como el carbón o el petróleo. La minería a cielo abierto (de superficie) obtiene materias primas justo en la superficie de la Tierra como el granito o el mármol.
