PLANT NUTRITION
Plant nutrition is very different to animal nutrition.
SPANISH: La nutrición de las plantas es muy diferente a la nutrición de los animales.
Photosynthesis/Fotosíntesis
Unlike animals, plants do not need to take in food. They make their own food though a process called photosynthesis. To do this, they meed: water, mineral salt, carbon dioxide and light.
SPANISH: Al contrario que los animales,las plantas no necesitan tomar comida. Ellas fabrican su propio alimento a través de un proceso llamado fotosíntesis. Para ello, necesitan: agua, sales minerales, dióxido de carbono y luz.
This is a very important process that takes place during the day in the green parts of plants. Plants release oxgen as a waste product of photosynthesis.
SPANISH: Es un proceso muy importante que tiene lugar durante el día en la parte verde de las plantas. Las plantas liberan oxígeno como producto de desecho durante la fotosíntesis.
1. Plants absorb water and mineral salt from the soil through their roots.
SPANISH: Las plantas absorben agua y sales minerales del suelo a través de sus raíces.
2. The mixture of water and mineral salts is called raw sap. It travels up the stem to the leaves through long tubes.
SPANISH: La mezcla de agua y sales minerales se llama savia bruta. Viaja por el tallo a las hojas a través de largos tubos.
3. Plant absorb carbon dioxide through their leaves. In the laves, raw sap mixes with carbon dioxide and turns into elaborated sap with the help of sunlight. Elaborated sap is food for the plant. During this process, plants release oxygen.
SPANISH: La planta absorbe dióxido de carbono a través de sus hojas. En las hojas, la savia bruta se mezcla con el dióxido de carbono y se transforma en savia elaborada. La savia elaborada es comida para la planta. Durante este proceso, la planta libera oxígeno.
4. Finally, elaborated sap is distributed to all parts of the plant through long tubes in the stem.
SPANISH: Finalmente, la savia elaborada es distribuida a todas las partes de la planta a través de largos tubos en el tallo.
Plant respiration
Like all living things, plants need to breathe. They take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
SPANISH: Como todos los seres vivos, las plantas necesitan respirar. Ellas toman oxígeno y liberan dióxido de carbono. (POR LA NOCHE).
During the day, plants breathe and perform photosynthesis.
SPANISH: Durante el día, las plantas respiran y realizan la fotosíntesis.
At night there is no sunlight, so plants only breathe.
SPANISH: Por la noche no hay luz solar, por eso las plantas solo respiran.
