PLANT REPRODUCTION
There are two types of reproduction in plants: sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction.
SPANISH: Hay dos tipos de reproducción en las plantas: reproducción sexual y reproducción asexual.
Sexual reproduction. Reproducción sexual.
Sexual reproduction takes place in the flowers. Flowers have different parts.
SPANISH: La reproducción sexual de las plantas tiene lugar en las flores. Las flores tienen partes diferentes.
Stames are the male parts of the flower. Pollen is produced in the stamens.
SPANISH: El estambre es la parte masculina de la flor. El polen se produce en los estambres.
The pistil is the female part. It is shaped like a bottle. It contains the ovary.
SPANISH: El pistilo es la parte femenina. Tiene forma de botella. Contiene el óvulo.
Petals are coloured leaves. The petals form the corolla.
SPANISH: Los pétalos son hojas coloreadas. Los pétalos forman la corola.
The sepals are the small green leaves that protect the flower. The sepals form the calyx.
SPANISH: Lps sépalos son las pequeñas hojas verdes que protegen las flores. Los séoalos forman el cáliz.
Plants reproduction has different stages.
SPANISH: La reproducción de las plantas tiene diferentes fases.
1. Pollen is formed in the stamens. El polen es formado en el estambre.
2. A grain of pollen reaches the pistil of another flower. Un grano de polen alcanza el pistilo de otra flor.
3. The ovary matures and turns into fruit. The fruit contains the seeds. El óvulo madura y se transforma en una fruta. La fruta contiene la semilla.
4. When a seed falls to the ground, it germinates and a new plant grows. Cuando una semilla cae a la tierra, germina y crece una nueva planta.
Asexual reproduction
Many plants can reproduce without flowers or seeds. These plants use parts of themselves to reproduce.
SPANISH: Muchas plantas pueden reproducirse sin flores o semillas. Estas plantas usan partes de ellas mismas para reproducirse.
Stolons/Estolones.
These are specialized stems that grow horizontally above the ground, like in strawberries.
SPANISH: Son tallos que crecen horizontalmente por encima del suelo, como las fresas.
Rhizomes/Rizomas.
These are specialized stems that grow horizontally underground, like in irises and ginger.
SPANISH: Son tallos que crezen horizontalmente bajo tierra como los lirios o el jenjibre.
Bulbs/Bulbos
These are underground stems with leaves that store food, like onions and garlic. Roots grow from the botton of the bulb.
SPANISH: Son tallos subterráneos con hojas que almacenan alimentos, como las cebollas y el ajo. Las raíces crecen desde la parte inferior del bulbo.
Tubers/Tubérculos
These are underground stems that develops roots, like potatoes. The stems and roots emerge from growing points called eyes.
SPANISH: Son tallos subterráneos que desarrollan raíces, como las patatas. Los tallos y raíces emergen de puntos de crecimiento llamados ojos.
