THE PROTISTA KINGDOM: PROTOZOA AND ALGAE

 What is the Protista kingdom?

The Protista kingdom contains unicellular and multicellular living organisms that live in water or in damp soil.

They can also live inside other living organisms. Protozoa and algae belong to this kingdom.

What are protozoa?

Protozoa are unicellular, heterotrophic and they have a nucleus.

They can be different shapes. Some protozoa cause serious diseases, such as malaria.

Other protozoa, called ciliates, have cilia for movement.

Some protozoa feed on bacteria and are used to break down the bacteria in raw sewage.

What are algae?

Algae can be unicellular or multicellular.

Unicellular algae

They can be microscopic or they can be very large, like seaweed.

Algae are autotrophic and carry out photosynthesis.

They normally live in water, but they also live on rocks and trees.

• Unicellular algae live in lakes and rivers. They have flagella to help them to move.

• Multicellular algae, like seaweed and kelp, live in the oceans.

They provide shelter and food for marine animals.

Algae can contaminate water if they reproduce too much.

Some algae produce toxins, but they also release oxygen into the atmosphere.

Some kinds of algae are used in food production.
