AMPHIBIANS

What are the characteristics of amphibians?

Physical appearance

Amphibians’ bodies change as they grow. Most young amphibians live underwater and have gills. They develop lungs as they grow. Some adult amphibians use both lungs and gills.

Tadpole

Adult amphibians can also obtain oxygen through their damp skin.

Body functions

Almost all amphibians are oviparous. Their eggs do not have shells. They lay them in water or in damp soil. Adult amphibians are land animals, but they also spend time in the water.

This keeps their skin damp. Amphibians have long tongues for catching insects.

Types

There are two main groups of amphibians.

Anura have strong back legs that are longer than the front legs. This helps them to jump and to swim.

Frog

Toad

Urodela have four legs of the same length and a long tail.

Salamander

Newt

Axolotl

Caecilians (Apoda)
