How do we get information from our environment?
The sense organs detect information.
• The eyes detect light.
• The ears detect sound vibrations.
• The nose detects different odours.
• The tongue detects different tastes.
• The skin detects different textures, temperatures and pressure.
What types of reactions are there?
Involuntary reactions happen very quickly. We call them reflexes. They happen automatically.
• You blink if something comes near your eye.
• You cough and sneeze to remove germs from your body.
• It’s hot and you start to sweat.
Voluntary reactions are ones that we decide to do. They take longer.
• Your teacher asks a question and you raise your hand.
• You need your pencil, so you walk to the other side of the room to get it.
• It’s hot and you move to stand in the shade of a tree.
