What are the characteristics of birds?
Physical appearance
The body of a bird is adapted to make it light. Two of its limbs are wings. A bird’s bones are hollow.
A bird’s body is covered with feathers. These help to control its body temperature. They can also help it to fly. Some birds have colourful feathers to attract a mate. Birds have small heads and beaks. They have very good eyesight.

Body functions
All birds are oviparous. They lay eggs with shells.
Birds are land animals. They obtain oxygen with their lungs. They have air sacs connected to the lungs that help them to use oxygen more efficiently.
Types
Most species are flying birds. They have a large sternum, or chest bone. This supports the muscles needed for flying. Some species, like ostriches and penguins, are flightless birds.
