FISH
What are the characteristics of fish?
Physical appearance
The shape of a fish’s body and its body functions are adapted to life underwater.
A fish has a shape that moves easily through water.
It contracts and relaxes its tail and other muscles to move forwards.

Fins help the fish to change direction as it swims.
Most fish are covered with protective scales.
Body functions
Most fish are oviparous.
Fish breathe mainly through their gills. Water enters their mouths and exits through their gills.
During this process, the water passes over capillaries in the gills. The capillaries absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
Types
• Bony fish have a skeleton made of hard bones.
• Cartilaginous fish have a skeleton made of softer and more flexible bones.
