LIFE IN HISPANIA

Cities/Ciudades

The Romans founded many cities in Hispania, for example Tarraco (Tarragona), Emerita Augusta (Mérida) or Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza).

SPANISH: Los Romanos fundaron muchas ciudades en Hispania, por ejemplo Tarraco (Tarragona), Emerita Augusta (Mérida) o Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza).

They were walled towns with straight roads. The Romans built very soild buildings using cement and concrete.

SPANISH: Había pueblos amurallados con caminos rectos. Los Romanos construyeron edificios muy sólidos usando cemento y hormigón.

The most imporant building were in the main square, which they called the forum. There were amphitheatre, where gladiators fought. There were theatres, where actors performed in comedians and tragedies. There were circuses, where there were horse and chariot races. There were baths, there people went to wash. There were temples, there people worshipped Roman gods.

SPANISH: Los edificios más importantes estaban en la plaza principal, llamada foro. Había anfiteatros, dónde los gladiadores luchaban. Había teatros, donde los actores realizaron comedias y tragedias. Había circos, dónde había caballos y carreras de carros. Había baños públicos, dónde las personas iban a bañarse. Había templos, dónde las personas adoraban a los dioses Romanos.

They built triumphal arches, roads and bridges. They built aqueducts to transport water.

SPANISH: Construyeron arcos de triunfo, carreteras y puentes. Construyeron acueductos para transportar agua.

Roman society/Sociedad Romana.

Roman society was divided into two groups: free people and slaves.

SPANISH: La sociedad estaba dividida en dos grupos: personas libres y esclavos.

Slaves were owned by another person. Slaves had no rights and did not have their own things. They worked on the land, in domestic service, in mines or as gladiators at the amphitheatre.

SPANISH: Los esclavos pertenecían a otras personas. Los esclavos no tenían derechos y no tenían sus propias pertenencias. Trabajaban en el campo, en el servicio doméstico, en las minas o como gladiadores en el anfiteatro.

Some free people were rich people called patricians. Other were craftsmen, merchants and farmers and were calle plebeians. Free people had rights and could take part in government.

SPANISH: Algunas de las personas libres eran ricos llamados patricios. Otros eran artesanos, mercaderes y granjeros llamados plebeyos. Las personas ricas tenían derechos y podían formar parte del gobierno.

The Romans lived in different types of houses:

SPANISH: Los Romanos vivían en diferentes tipos de casas.

Domus were privates houses for rich people. They were large homes with an atrium, or patio, in the centre to let in light.

SPANISH: Las domus fueron casas privadas para personas ricas. Eran enormes casas con un atrio, o patio, en el centro para permitir la luz.

Insulae were apartment buildings for poor people. They had three of four storeys. Most Romans lived in an insula. These buildings were crowded and uncomfortable.

SPANISH: Las ínsulas fueron edificios de apartamentos para ciudadanos pobres. Tenían tres o cuatro pisos. La mayoría de los Romanos vivían en un ínsula. Estos edificios estaban llenos de gente y eran incómodos.
