The Roman conquest/La conquista Romana

The Roman Empire/El Imperio Romano

The city of Rome was founded in 753 B.C. on the Italian Peninsula. The Roman people created a huge empire.

SPANISH: La ciudad de Roma fue fundada en el año 753 antes de Cristo en la Península Itálica. Los Romanos crearon un imperio enorme.

First, they conquered the whole Italy. Later, the Romans conquered other peoples along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

SPANISH: En primer lugar, conquistaron toda Italia. Más tarde, los Romanos conquistaron otros pueblos a lo largo de la costa del Mar Mediterráneo.

The Roman Empire lasted until 476 A.D. In that year, the last Roman Emperor, was defeated.

SPANISH: El Imperio Romano acabó en el año 476 Después de Cristo. En ese año, el último Emperador Romano fue derrotado.

The Roman army/El ejército Romano

The Roman conquerors had a powerfull army. It was made up of legions. Each legion had betweeen 5.000 and 6000 soldiers.

SPANISH: Los conquistadores Romanos tenían un poderoso ejército. Estaba compuesto por legiones. Cada legión tenía entre 5.000 y 6.000 soldados.

The soldiers was called legionaries. The training was very though. The legionaries were paid a salary and had to stay in the army for 20 years.

SPANISH: Los soldados se llamaban legionarios. El entrenamiento era muy duro. Se les pagaba un salario y tenían que estar en el ejército durante 20 años.

The Roman conquest of Hispania/La conquista Romana de Hispania

The Romans and the Carthaginians fought each other in the Punic Wars. In 218 B.C., the Romans arrived on the Iberian Peninsula. They quickly defeated the Carthaginian army and expelled the Carthaginians.

SPANISH: Los Romanos y los Cartagineses lucharon entre sí durante las Guerras Púnicas. En el año 218 Antes de Cristo, los Romanos llegaron a la Península Ibérica. Rápidamente derrotaron al ejército Cartaginés y expulsaron a los Cartagineses.

The Romans occupied the Iberian Peninsula and called it Hispania.

The conquest lasted over 200 years:

SPANISH: Los Romanos ocuparon la Península Ibérica y la llamaron Hispania. La conquista duró unos 200 años:

The Romans quickly occupied the Mediterranean coast. SPANISH: Los Romanos ocuparon rápidamente la costa Mediterránea.

Later, the Romans conquered the tribes who lived inland. This was more difficult, as the tribes put up a strong resistance. SPANISH: Más tarde, los Romanos conquistaron a las tribus que vivían en el interior. Fue más difícil debido a que las tribus pusieron mucha resistencia.

Finally, in 19 B.C. the emperor Augustus defeated the tribes from the north. The Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula was completed. SPANISH: Finalmente, el año 19 A.C. el emperador Augusto derrotó a las tribus del norte. La conquista de la Península Ibérica terminó.

The organization of Hispania/La organización de Hispania.

The Romans divided Hispania into five provinces: Beatica, Lusitania, Tarraconensis, Gallaecia and Carthaginensis.

SPANISH: Los Romanos dividieron Hispania en cinco provincias: Bética, Lusitania, Tarraconenesis, Gallaecia y Cartaginensis.

Each province was ruled by a governor. The Romans introduced the laws of the Roman Empire. Many of today's law are based on Roman law.

SPANISH: Cada provincia fue gobernada por un gobernador. Los Romanos introdujeron las leyes del Imperio Romano. Muchas de las leyes actuales están basadas en el derecho Romano.
