Biodiversity

 What is biodiversity?

The biodiversity of an ecosystem is the collection of all the different species that live there. The biodiversity of an ecosystem includes three main factors.

Ecosystem diversity (when an ecosystem contains a variety of smaller ecosystems).

Species diversity (when an ecosystem contains many different species).

Genetic diversity (when an ecosystem contains different populations of a species).

There are low levels of biodiversity in places with extreme climate conditions.

An example is the North Pole. There are average levels of biodiversity in places with a temperate climate. An example is the Sierra Nevada National Park in Spain.

There are high levels of biodiversity in tropical rainforests, where it is always warm.

Aquatic ecosystems

Aquatic ecosystems have high levels of biodiversity. There are three main types of aquatic ecosystems.

• Marine ecosystems are found in the oceans. Coral reefs in tropical, coastal waters have the highest level of biodiversity of all the aquatic ecosystems. They include over 25% of all known marine species.

• Freshwater ecosystems include rivers and lakes. They have a high level of biodiversity, with many species of plants, birds, insects and fish.

• Mixed ecosystems are where the land meets the water. This can be salt water, such as Doñana National Park or fresh water, such as Tablas de Daimiel National Park. Many birds, amphibians, fish and plants live in mixed ecosystems.

ECOSYSTEMS

 What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is all the living organisms and the non-living things in a specific place, and the relationships between them. The biotope is a physical place. It includes non-living things, like water, air, soil, rocks, sunlight and temperature. The biocoenosis is all of the living organisms, such as plants, animals and other organisms. It includes different species, which are groups of living organisms that can reproduce and produce fertile offspring.

What is a balanced ecosystem?

All the living organisms in the biocoenosis depend on each other. They also depend on the biotope. For an ecosystem to work efficiently, these relationships must be in balance.

A balanced ecosystem can be affected by natural disasters or human intervention.

What is a food chain?

A food chain shows the feeding relationships between living organisms.

The food chain helps to keep an ecosystem in balance. Three types of living organisms make up the food chain.

Producers make their own food through photosynthesis. Algae and plants are producers.

Consumers feed on other living organisms. Herbivores feed on producers. Carnivores feed on other consumers. Omnivores feed on producers, consumers and decomposers.

Decomposers feed on the remains of other living organisms. They transform the remains into substances like water, minerals and carbon dioxide. These substances go back into the ecosystem and are used by the producers.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

We urgently to control human activities to protect our planet. If not, we will suffer serious consequences:
SPANISH: Debemos urgentemente controlar las actividades humanas para proteger nuestro planeta. De lo contrario, sufriremos serias consecuencias:

- Many species of plants and animals will become extinct. (Muchas especies de plantas y animales se extinguirán).
- Natural resources will be exhausted. (Los recursos naturales se agotarán).
- Water and air will be too polluted to drink or breathe. (El agua y el aire estarán demasiados contaminados para beber o respirar):
- The land will be covered with rubbish. (La tierra se cubrirá de basura).

Apart from the global actions and local policies that governments should develops, each of us xan do our part to save the planet. Some actions that can contribute to sustainabilty are the following:
SPANISHAdemás de las acciones globales y las políticas locales que los gobiernos deberían desarrollar, cada uno de nosotros debe poner de nuestra parte para salvar el planeta. Algunas acciones que pueden contribuir a la sostenibilidad son las siguientes:

SAVE WATER (AHORRAR AGUA)

SAVE ENERGY (AHORRAR ENERGÍA)

EAT ORGANIC PRODUCE (COMER PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS)

COMPOST (COMPOSTA/ABONO)

PREVENT AIR POLLUTION (PREVENIR A LA CONTAMINACIÓN DEL AIRE).

BUY LOCAL PRODUCTS (COMPRAR PRODUCTOS LOCALES).

AVOID PLASTICS (EVITAR LOS PLÁSTICOS).
