How can we measure our lungs?

ENGLISH:

Hi, I’m Matthew!  Today on Experiment Time, we’re going to measure the air in a breath!  

So, what we need is, a big bowl half full of water, a big plastic bottle, full right to the top with water, a plastic tube like this, and a ruler.  

Now, with the help of my assistant, we’re gonna turn the bottle upside down, placing our hand on the top, so we don’t lose any water. 

Right! So now, we are going to put the tube under the water and into the bottle. Remember the bottle needs to be under water at all times! You might need a helping hand in this too. Don’t take the bottle out. 

Now, I’m gonna take a normal breath and blow into the tube, and see what happens. 

OK. So, what’s happened? That’s right! The water’s gone down because of the air of my lungs. The water has been displaced because of the air in my breath. 

Let’s measure the air in my breath. So, that’s about 16 centimetres. Let’s write that down. OK, so that’s 16 centimetres and the bottle’s 32 centimetres, so, that’s half. The bottle is 5 litres, so the breath was 2.5 litres. 

So now, we’re gonna try again, this time with a bigger breath. So we’ll have to fill up the bottle, up to the top again, but why don’t you try it first? Don’t forget to have someone help you twisting the bottle.

¡Hola, soy Matthew! Hoy, en experiment time, vamos a medir el aire en un soplido.

Lo que necesitamos es un recipiente grande llenado por la mitad de agua, una gran botella de plástico (garrafa). Llena la parte superior con agua, un tubo de plástico y una regla.

Ahora, con la ayuda de mi asistenta, pondremos la botella boca abajo y colocaremos nuestra mano en la parte superior para no perder agua.

¡Correcto! Ahora, vamos a colocar el tubo bajo el agua dentro de botella. No olvides que la botella debe estar bajo el agua en todo momento. Es posible que también necesites ayuda en esta parte. No saques la botella.

Ahora, voy a toma una respiración normal y soplar en el tubo, y a ver que pasa.

Ok, entonces ¿qué pasó? ¡Está bien! El agua se ha reducido debido al aire de mis pulmones. El agua se ha desplazado debido al aire de mi aliento. Midamos el aire de mi aliento. 

Vamos a escribir eso. Ok, entonces esto es 16 centímetros y la botella es de 32 centímetros, así que, eso es la mitad. La botella es de 5 litros, por lo que la respiración fue de 2.5 litros. Entonces vamos a intentarlo de nuevo, esta vez con un aliento más grande. Así que tendremos que llenar de nuevo la botella, pero ¿por qué no lo intentas tú primero?
