Spanish territory

Spain is a country in south-west Europe. Spanish territory consists of most of the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the coast of North Africa.

SPANISH: España es un país del suroeste de Europa. El territorio español consiste en la mayor parte de la Península Ibérica, las Islas Baleares en el Mar Mediterráneo, las Islas Canarias en el Océano Atlántico y las ciudades de Ceuta y Melilla en la costa del Norte de África.

Spain has borders with other countries. Borders can be formed naturally, for example, by seas or mountains. They can also be political, when they are lines that separate countries. The borders of Spain are:

SPANISH: España tiene frontera o límite con otros países. Las fronteras o límites pueden ser formadas de forma natural, por ejemplo, por mares o montañas. También pueden ser formadas políticamente, cuando hay líneas que separan países. Las fronteras de España son las siguientes:

- To the north, the Bay of Biscay, the Pyrenees, France and Andorra. Al norte, el Golfo de Vizacaya, los Pirineos, Francia y Andorra.

- To the west, the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal. Al oeste, el Océano Atlántico y Portugal.

Spain, a country of the European Union

The European Union (EU) is a political and economic organization which brings together twenty-eight European countries. They collaborate with each other to improve their economy and society.

SPANISH: La Unión Europea (UE) es una organización política y económica que reúne a veintiocho países europeos. Ellos colaboran unos con otros para mejorar su economía y sociedad.

The EU offers advantages for the countries that are part of it.

SPANISH: La UE ofrece ventajas para los países que forman parte de ella.

- A country's products can be sold in any country of the EU without paying taxes. Los productos de un país pueden ser vendidos a cualquier país de la UE sin tener que pagar tasas o impuestos.

- European citizenships allows the inhabitants of EU countries to live, study or work in any EU country. Los ciudadanos europeos pueden vivir, estudiar o trabajar en cualquier país de la UE.

- Many EU countries share the same currency, the euro. Muchos países de la UE utilizan la misma moneda, el euro.

How the European Union is governed

The EU has its own institutions. The most important of these are:

SPANISH: La Unión Europea tiene sus propias instituciones. Las más importantes de estas son.

The European Parliament/El Parlamento Europeo.

This represents the citizens of the EU. It is composed of the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who pass laws.

SPANISH: Representa los ciudadanos de la Unión Europea. Está compuesto por los miembros del Parlamento Europeos (Eurodiputados), quienes aprueban leyes.
