PLANTS: PART OF A PLANT

Most plants have roots, leaves and a stem.

SPANISH: La mayoría de las plantas tienen raíces, hojas y un tallo.

ROOTS/RAÍCES

Roots are the parts of the plant that are underground.

SPANISH: Las raíces son la parte de la planta que está bajo tierra.

Roots have two main function: they fix the plant to ground and they absorb water and other substances from the soil. Some plants have a thick root which stores food for the plant, for example, carrots, beetroor and yucca. People eat these roots.

SPANISH: Las raíces tienen dos funciones principales: fijar la planta a la tierra y ellas absorben agua y otras sustancias de la tierra. Algunas plantas tienen una raíz gruesa con la que almacenan alimento como la zanahoria, la remolacha o la yuca. La gente come estas raíces.

STEMS/TALLOS

The stem support the plant. It is above the ground. Stems transport water and other substances to all parts of the plant. The stem usually divides up into branches. The branches support the leaves, the flowers and the fruit.

SPANISH: El tallo mantiene erguida a la planta. Está por encima del suelo. El tallo transporta el agua y otras sustancias a todas las partes de la planta. El tallo normalmente se divide en ramas. Las romas soportan las hojas, las flores y el fruto.

There are two types of stems:

SPANISH: Hay dos tipos de tallos.

Herbaceous stems: are soft and flexible. They are usually green. Grasses have herbaceous stems. SPANISH: Tallos herbáceos: son blandos y flexible. Son normalmente verdes. Las hierbas tienen tallo herbáceo.
Woody stems: are hard and rigid. Trees have a woody stem called a trunk. The branches grow from the trunk. Bushes also have a trunk but the are shorter. Branches grow close to the ground. SPANISH: Tallos leñosos: son duros y rígidos. Los árboles tienen un tallo leñoso llamado tronco. Las ramas crecen del tronco. Los arbustos también tienen un tronco pero son más cortos. Las ramas crecen cerca del suelo.

LEAVES/HOJAS

Leaves are the green parts of a plant that grow from the stem or the branches. Plants make their own food in the leaves. Leaves have two parts: the petiolo and the leaf blade.

SPANISH: Las hojas son la parte verde de la planta que crece del tallo o las ramas. Las plantas fabrican su propia comida en las hojas. Las hojas tienen dos partes: el peciolo y la lámina.

There are many different types of leaves. They are classified according to their edge and the shape of the leaf blade

SPANISH: Hay muchos tipos diferentes de hojas. Se clasficican de acuerdo a su borde y la forma de su lámina.

Deciduous plants lose their leaves in autumn. Other plants have green leaves all year round. These plants are called evergreen.

SPANISH: Las plantas de hoja caduca pierden sus hojas en otoño. Otras plantas tiene hojas verdes durante todo el año. Estas plantas se llaman de hojas perennes.
