  How can we classify animals?

There are different ways to classify animals.

What they feed on

We can classify animals by what they feed on.

• Carnivores feed on other animals.

• Herbivores feed on plants.

• Omnivores feed on other animals and plants.

How they reproduce

We can classify animals by how they reproduce.

• Oviparous. The young develop inside an egg. The mother lays the egg. The young break out of the egg shell and are born.

• Viviparous. The young develop inside the mother. The mother gives birth to live young.

Their body structure

We can classify animals by their body structure.

• Vertebrates. These animals have a backbone and an internal bone skeleton.

• Invertebrates. These animals don’t have a backbone or an internal bone skeleton.
