OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Our digestive system helps us to get the nutrients we need from food.

SPANISH: Nuestro sistema digestivo nos ayuda a obtener los nutrientes que necesitamos de la comida.

Digestive system

The mouth has teeth that break the food into small pieces and a tongue that mixes the food with saliva so it's easy to swallow.

SPANISH: La boca tiene dientes que rompen la comida en piezas pequeñas y una lengua que mezcla la comida con saliva para que sea más fácil tragarla.

The esophagus is a long tube. Food goes down here to the stomach.

SPANISH: El esófago es un tubo largo. La comida baja por aquí hasta el estómago.

The stomach is like a bag. The food stays here for about three hours. Gastric juices break down the food even more and turn it into a thick liquid. The thick liquid leaves the stomach and goes into the small intestine.

SPANISH: El estómago es como una bolsa. La comida permanece aquí alrededor de tres horas. Los jugos gástricos descomponen la comida todavía más y la transforman en un líquido espeso. El líquido espeso sale del estómago y se dirige al intestino delgado.

The small intestine is a very long thin tube. There are lots of blood vessels around the tube. The thick liquid from the stomach goes through here and the nutrients pass into the blood.

SPANISH: El intestino delgado es un tubo muy largo y delgado. Hay muchos vasos sanguíneos alrededor del tubo. El líquido espeso del estómago pasa por aquí y los nutrientes van a la sangre.

The large intestine is a wide tube. It connects to the anus. What our body doesn't need goes along here and out through the anus when we go to the toilet.

SPANISH: El intestino largo es un tubo profundo. Está conectado con el ano. Lo que nuestro cuerpo no necesita va por aquí y es expulsado por el ano cuando vamos al retrete.
