What are historical eras?
Historians divide history into periods of time called historical eras.
• Prehistory refers to the time before humans started recording events. The first evidence of human history dates from more than 250 000 years ago.
• Ancient History starts when humans invented writing. It ends with the fall of the Roman Empire.

How do we know about the past?
Historical sources give us information about the past.
• Oral sources refer to the spoken word, such as stories and legends.
• Audio sources refer to information by sound, like music or songs.
• Written sources can include documents, letters, newspapers and books.
• Graphic sources show images. Examples are cave paintings, photos, film and maps.
• Physical sources refer to objects from the past.
