There are many different animals. We can divide them into two main groups: animals that have a spine and animals that don't.

Hay diferentes tipos de animales. Podemos dividirlos en dos grupos: animales que tienen columna vertebral y animales que no la tienen.

Animal Classifications

VERTEBRATES (vertebrados)

The name for animals with a spine is vertebrates. They have a skeleton inside them. Most vertebrates have a head, a torso, limbs and a tail.

El nombre que se le da a los animales con columna vertebral es vertebrados. Ellos tienen un esqueleto dentro de ellos. La mayoría de los vertebrados tienen cabeza, tronco, extremidades y cola.

INVERTEBRATES (invertebrados)

The name for animals that don't have a spine is invertebrates. They don't have a skeleton inside them. They're usually smaller than vertebrates.

SPANISH: El nombre que le damos a los animales que no tienen columna vertebral es invertebrados. No tienen esqueleto por dentro. Normalmente son más pequeños que los vertebrados.

Invertebrates animals protect their bodies in different ways: some invertebrates have a shell to protect their bodies, for example, snails and oysters. Some invertebrates have a exoeskeleton. This is hard like a skeleton but it's outside the body. Crabs and cockroaches have an exoeskeleton. Some invertebrates don't have any protection. They have a soft body, for example a caterpillar.

SPANISH: Los invertebrados protegen sus cuerpos de diferentes formas: algunos de ellos tienen una concha para proteger su cuerpo como los caracoles o las ostras. Otros tienen un exoesqueleto, como un esqueleto duro externo (por fuera, como un caparazón). Los cangrejos y las cucarachas tienen exoesqueleto. Algunos invertebrados no tienen ninguna protección, tienen un cuerpo blando como las orugas.
