The Fungi kingdom

 What is the Fungi kingdom?

Fungi are heterotrophic living organisms.

They feed on the remains of living organisms.

There are unicellular fungi and multicellular fungi.

Fungi can be large or microscopic.

Some fungi are parasitic and live off other living organisms.

Cordyceps unilateralis

• Yeast is unicellular and feeds on sugar in very ripe fruitIt also lives in the mouths, skin, intestines and mucous membranes of animals.

• Mould is multicellular. It grows on damp surfaces, fruit and bread.

• Mushrooms are multicellular. They grow in damp, shady places and decompose the remains of other living organisms. Decomposition is an essential part of the food chain, because it returns nutrients to the soil.

How do we use fungi?

We use fungi in many different ways.

Penicillin was first made from mould.

Yeast makes bread rise.

Yeast is used in some drinks.

Some food spreads are made from yeast.

Some mushrooms are edible.

Some mushrooms are poisonous.

Blue cheese is made using mould.
