The Plantae kingdom

 What is the Plantae kingdom?

Plants are multicellular living organisms with eukaryotic cells that have a rigid cell wall.

Plants are autotrophic. They make their own food though the process of photosynthesis. They take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide during respiration.

They release waste substances: oxygen (during photosynthesis), carbon dioxide (during respiration) and water vapour.

Plants react to the environment by:

• growing towards the light.

• growing their roots in soil that contains water.

• responding to contact.

• responding to changes in the seasons.

How do plants reproduce?

Plants can reproduce by sexual reproduction or by asexual reproduction.

In sexual reproduction, pollen is transferred from the male part of a plant to the female part of a plant. This is called pollination.

The fertilised ovule grows into a seed and the ovary becomes the fruit.

The seed grows into a new plant when it comes into contact with soil and the right temperature.

In asexual production, there is no pollination or fertilisation.

A part of the parent plant branches out, grows roots and becomes a new plant.
