How are bacteria harmful?

Bacteria are infectious agents.

They reproduce very quickly and spread many diseases, from eye infections to serious diseases.

They can also contaminate our food and cause salmonella poisoning.

How are bacteria helpful?

We use bacteria to make food, like yoghurt and cheese.

We also use bacteria to purify water and to break down contaminants in the sea.

The bacteria in our stomach are essential for digesting food.

The first proper antibiotic, penicillin, was made using bacteria.
